In late February, British researchers released a study linking fluoride with hypothyroidism, which is characterized by the lack of thyroid hormone responsible for metabolism. However, as The Conversation's health and medicine editor Reema Rattan reports, following its release, a number of dental and medical experts have criticized the study for its poor design. The critics say the study singled out the correlation between the instances of hypothyroidism and the amount of fluoride in community waters, disregarding potential confounders. As conventional doctrine on scientific studies suggests: ""Correlation does not imply causation.""
